The history of Medical University of Warsaw - one of the oldest in Poland - went back to School of Anatomy. In 1789 the School of Surgery was set up at St. Lazarus Hospital.
The Academic Medical Faculty of Warsaw or Academy of Medicine was established in 1809 by Stanisław Staszic who was the first Head, being at the same time the Chairman of Warsaw Association of Patrons of Science (founded in 1800) which was regarded as the first centre of medical research.
Those days the Academy of Medicine educated physicians, surgeons and pharmacists. The level of instruction was comparable to other European Universities and foreign students also were the graduates of Academy.
During XIX century many students fought in two risings (1830 and 1863). Due to these facts final decision of tsar authorities was to dissolve the Academy and to replace it by Imperial University of Warsaw.
The University of Warsaw had been reestablished in 1917 and in 1918 Poland regained independence.
During 2nd World War all University level schools were closed and only clandestine education was provided.
In 1950 faculties of medicine and pharmacy at all Polish univerisities were transformed into independent tertiary schools.
In Warsaw Medical University was created which comprised the Faculty of Medicine (with Sub-Faculty of Dentistry).
In 1975 the 2nd Faculty of Medicine was established and since 1993 comprised the English Division with English as the language of instruction.
At present the University prides itself being in the front rank of Polish Medical Universities and its main objective is to maintain the process of continuous improvement in the quality of teaching, research and other activities.
