Infomation for Students

Duration of the study and the academic year

Matriculation

The total duration of the study lasts 12 semesters i.e. 6 academic years consisting of 2 preclinical and 4 clinical years with core subjects and cllinical clerkships.
Students are expected to attend all lectures and practical classes.
Each academic year starts about 1stOctober and ends about 30th June (30 weeks). It consists of 2 semesters (30 teaching weeks) - the winter one (beginning of October till mid-Febraury) and the spring one (mid-Febraury till the end of June).
Examination sessions are in January/February and in June.
Usually between semesters is one week break. The students are also given with one week break at Christmas and Easter time.

Clinics and departments

A computer room in the Department of Medical Informatics

The Faculty of Medicine in Warsaw consists of 75 departments and clinics. Among them there are 38 departments of premedical and preclinical disciplines, and 37 clinics.
Preclinical instruction is led by Departments of Gross Anatomy, Histology and Embriology, Medical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology and Parasitology, Biophysics, Immunology, Orthopedis and Traumatology, Physiology, Cytophysiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Public Health and Epidemiology as well as Social Medicine. All these departments give the students a modern and reliable foundation of theoretical medicine.
Clinical departments deal with human diseases and maternity. There are clinics of: Anaesthesia and Intensive Therapy, Internal Medicine (seven departments), Pediatrics (nine departments), Surgery (seven departments), Neurology, Obstetrics and Ginecology (three departments), Dermatology, Endocrinology, Venerology, Ophtalmology and Otorhinolaryngology, Radiology. The medical staff is composed of 1200 people including 144 senior professors.
The majority of staff members were trained in the best universities of Europe and the USA.

Clinical clerkships

University Hospital

After each year of study (during the summer holiday)it is mandatory for all students to have practical training totalling 20 weeks on the entire course of study. This practical experience covers 6 weeks of nursing and two weeks devoted to each of the following areas of medicine: pediatrics, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency care and accessory investigations. Furthermore two periods by one week each are spent at district health centers and regional administration unit for the control of epidemics and hygiene control.

Research and special options

J.E.Cotes (University of Newcastle, UK)

The main objective of The Medical University of Warsaw is to provide instructions however there are also opportunities for students to participate in one of the numerous programs carried out at the University. The research programs are supported by Committee of Research and International, European as well as American Organizations.
Furthermore students wishing to focus their attention and ability on a specific topic of medicine have opportunity to attend a student’s research group. This kind of study is supervised by a tutor (usually a senior professor chosen by a student). The objective of the study is to extend and intensify the students knowledge of a particular discipline so that she/he can start working on her/his thesis for a Ph.D. degree as early as possible.

Assessment

Students are expected to complete successfully all particular courses before being approved for promotion to the succesive year. During each semester students’ performance in all mandatory courses is evaluated and recorded. The final assessment is determined by the instructions of the departments or clinics holding the course. At the end of each course the student ranking is evaluated from the score achieved in multiple choice tests (MCQ) written, oral and/or examinations.
The student assessment scale includes the following grades:

Some courses use only pass/fail.
If the student fails tests or exams she/he may according to the school regulations take them again.
If the student fails to take an exam at the appointed date without any reasonable excuse she/he is assigned a non-passing grade or "failure" that is documented at her/his records before graduating with a medical diploma the candidate is required to complete successfully all the courses by passing examinations with the final grade assigned at least as "satisfactory".

Insurance and vaccinations

Students are requested to make their own insurance arrangements where possible through a recognized broker. No special vaccinations are required for entry into Poland.

Students should purchase books theirselves or borrow them from the University Library.

Students are expected to adhere to the highest standards in all their courses and research. Individuals violating this code of conduct are subjected to disciplinary action include plagiarism, fraud and conflict of interest. Every student should be familiar with the code of conduct!
